Scott DeMario, HR Benefits Consultant at CUNA Mutual Group, shares his story of implementing BlueStar:

Self-insured medical plans require plan sponsors to be vigilant in finding ways to balance the best value in coverage for participants while doing what’s best for the bottom line of the plan. We are constantly evaluating what strategies will deliver the best results in both areas; but the days of cost shifting, tracking down the best network discounts and pharmacy prices will only deliver so much.

Using Digital Therapeutics to assist patients in managing their chronic conditions is a growing and sustainable new direction for plans to investigate. Our first exposure in this field came through a new partnership with Welldoc’s BlueStar tool to help manage our group’s type 2 diabetes population. In the span of just one quarter, nearly 35% of our targeted population have enrolled in the BlueStar solution and have experienced over 4000 unique engagements ranging from managing blood glucose, to food choices, medications, physical activity and education. Many have already made measurable improvements, including an increase in in-range readings from 67% to 78%, which continue to trend upwards.

We felt BlueStar did everything right to document the effectiveness and safety of their product, secured the necessary security designations for the handling of sensitive data and made the use of their product intuitive for the patients AND the medical community. We are proud of the difference the tool is making in both people’s lives and the performance of our medical plan.
