National Nurses Day: 3 Things To Know

Medical professionals discussing contents on a file

While many nurses are working tirelessly through the coronavirus pandemic, it is certainly top of mind on National Nurses Day. Despite all of the challenges in this moment, now more than ever, we want to pay special recognition and celebrate nurses.

Here at Welldoc, we would like to say thank you to every single nurse who is a frontline healthcare hero day in and day out, keeping us safe and being with us during these difficult times.

In the spirit of this special day, our SVP of Clinical Services Malinda Peeples, RN, CDCES, FADCES, is highlighting a few things to know about nurses. Read her thoughts below:

Florence Nightingale Led With Data

National Nurses Week wraps up on Tuesday, May 12, which will actually mark 200 years since Florence Nightingale was born! As many of you know, Florence Nightingale was the founder of modern nursing.

Given my background in nursing and data, I am particularly interested in her work pioneering statistical methods and paving the way for clinicians to save lives. The impact is especially important today when we think about epidemiology and the statistical implications as a pandemic spreads.

Special Thanks to Nurses and Educators

Did you know that National Nurses Week and Teacher Appreciation Week overlap every year? I am so grateful for everyone in nursing who helps further education through nursing programs and our communities.

As a Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist myself, I know education can have a huge impact. Diabetes is a disease where education and helping people self-manage can make a real difference, so it has always been my passion. I have been pleased to be part of the incredible work done by ADCES to advance innovative diabetes education.

2020 is the International Year of the Nurse

Not only is today National Nurses Day and we celebrate all week, but did you know the World Health Organization designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse? There are incredible stories and messages being shared all around the world celebrating nurses.

To give you an example, I am also excited to join the University of Maryland School of Nursing in celebrating and honoring the pivotal role nurses play in providing evidence-based, empathetic health care in Maryland, nationwide, and around the globe. I studied here at the top Nursing Informatics Specialty program in the country, and I now serve on the University of Maryland Baltimore Foundation Board of Trustees. You can learn more about their campaign here.
